2008 Constitution Party of Louisiana State Convention

The Constitution Party of Louisiana held its first State Convention on March 15, 2008 at the Hampton in Baton Rouge (4646 Constitution Ave, Baton Rouge, LA 70808).

After singing the National Anthem and introducing the officers and other members of the party, State Chairman Rob Waldron read an essay on the purpose of government by Attorney and CPofLA Member Shane Landry.

John Watts, who was the party's candidate for U.S. House of Representatives for District 5 in 2006, spoke on the importance of spreading the party's message and bring new people in the party. He told everyone that just as voting is everyone's civic duty, so is running for office and he would do anything he could to help out any other member of the Constitution Party running for office.

Former Ambassador to the United Nations Alan Keyes addressed the convention via telephone. Keyes, a former candidate for the Republican Party Presidential Nomination and a possible candidate for the Constitution Party Presidential Nomination, said that the Republican Party was no longer a home for conservatives.

Tom Cryer spoke on his experience of facing the Internal Revenue Service in court, and winning. He also spoke on the Constitution and that all parts are equally important. He explained the different levels of government with the federal government being on top and is the smallest, followed by the state government, and then the people who are the largest. Additionally he spoke on what parts are and are not Constitutional.

Next was Peter Vidrine, the party's candidate for U.S. House of Representatives for District 7 in 2008. Vidrine was as a Republican in 1996. Unlike 1996, he will be able to put a lot more time and money into his campaign. Staying in the Republican Party is a lost cause. As long as true conservatives vote for the Republicans as they are, then the Republicans have no reason to be conservative. Also by running as a member of the Constitution Party, Vidrine will be on the November ballot and everyone - CP members as well as Republican, Democrats, Libertarians, and Independents - will have the opportunity to vote for him.

Statesments were also read from Max Rieske, Dr. Don Grundmann, and former U.S. Representative Steve Stockman, all of whom are seeking or are considering seeking the Constitution Party's Presidential Nomination.

Unable to make the convention were State Chaplain Charles McGowen, the Louisiana Field Director for U.S. Representative Ron Paul's Presidential Campaign Andrew Axsom, and U.S. Representative for District 6 in the May 3 Special Election Randall T. Hayes. Hayes sent a statement to the convention that he was happy the party is growing and believes we will achieve recognized party status and will have candidates elected to office very soon.

Delegates to the National Convention include National Committee Member and author of the book Ron Paul and the New Revolutionaries Trent Hill and 2004 candidate for the Libertarian Party Presidential Nomination Jeffrey Diket. Present at the Convention were former U.S. Representative John Rarick and Mrs. Frances Rarick.

A presidential straw poll was also held. Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore, Alan Keyes, Steve Stockman, Jerome Corsi, 2004 Vice Presidential Nominee Chuck Baldwin, Don Grundmann, Diane Templin, and Max Rieske were on the ballot and Montana State Representative Rick Jore received two write-in votes out of a total of 24. In the final round of voting, Moore defeated Keyes 15 - 9.
